Our situation is bleak, becoming dire. It's all very well - and frankly encouraging - to read the posts here and on other like-minded blogs.
But the simple fact of the matter is, beyond giving encouragement to ourselves, we're not really doing anything very effective.
We need to shut down this immoral government and place a burden on those who support it. Otherwise, what recourse remains to us? Taking up arms against our own government? This is a horrible step to consider - violence and war are never good answers, and even the possibilty of considering such an action is abhorrent to me.
But we are faced with the stark reality of our own ineffectiveness. That must change, and it must change with overwhelming magnitude, or it will fail to topple the entrenched powers aligned against the better nature of the American people.
We have failed to muster enough presence in marches and demonstrations to make any difference - besides, it's easy enough for a network or a media company to ignore such things.
What they cannot ignore, though, is a sustained action that hits them in their wallet. What do you think about this:
Let's resolve to boycott every sponsor of every news broadcast that fails to to meet a well-defined standard. And what should that standard be? I think there's room for discussion here, but I'd propose something along these lines (details to be fleshed out): The news entity must pursue the Bush Administration and rightwing politicians with at least the same zeal it hounded Clinton. Until it does so consistently, the sponsors will be boycotted.
The sponsors and media should be notified they are being boycotted. They will likely ignore or laugh it off initially, but if enough of us do it long enough, they will have to react in some way. I think we have few greater weapons than our commitment and discipline to reducing the income of those supporting the horrific policies of the last 5 years.
