Looking at a list of congressional districts, I noticed that an usually large number of liberal icons live in the 8th district.
Jerrold Nadler? NY-8, representing lower Manhattan. Nancy Pelosi? CA-8, representing San Francisco.
If you live in the D.C. area and are huddled up against the District for liberal warmth, you're in Maryland's 8th district (Montgomery County, a slice of Prince George's County) or Virginia's 8th district (Arlington, Alexandria, and Reston.)
If you're browsing Daily Kos from the People's Republic of Cambridge, Somerville, or Jamaica Plain, you're represented by Mike Capuano, MA-8.
And for the true New Dealers among us, James Oberstar represents Minnesota's Iron Range in MN-8.
As always, there are exceptions. PA-8 (Bucks County) and WA-8 (eastern King County) both elected Republicans in 2004, but they're going to make good their errors this fall. They may not be progressive havens, but they're coming along. AZ-8 (Tucson) and IN-8 (Evansville) are a far cry from Cambridge, but they're even more likely to tip into the "good 8s" column this year when Jim Kolbe goes into retirement and John Hostettler loses.
So, do you live in the 8th? Wish you did? Glad you don't? Live in a scary 8th district? (I'm talking to you, Texas, Ohio, and Missouri.) Speak up!
