Tags has an entry for Big Love, the HBO series about Mormon
poligamy polygamy, but strangely there's nothing there. This will be my second article on Big Love, the first is over at
here. (Not dKos.) Before I write more I'll reread what I wrote before. Basically I want to talk about it. This will probably be a ramble. So if you have something to say, then join me after the jump.
I reread my post. It seems that the Big Love writers are calling me out on my doubts. The families of Big Love are being bound together, communal-wise and sister-wise. Also they are so far not taking the easy out of child brides as a way to Demonize Roman.
Now with the end of West Wing, I will be fixating on the politics of Big Love. And there is a lot of politics, even if it's all subtext and much of it household.
You see, I really want Bill, Barb, Nickki and Margene to make it. Tonights rerun (we have had too much to watch on Sunday) was very moving for me. I was so glad to see them defending their life-style. Hell, it's not a lifestyle, it's a life choice.
I am an escaped Christian. Yet I find all the Christian religious stuff interesting. I loved it when before the hunting trip a few episodes back they prayed to Jesus before killing their deer. The Baptism tonight was very watchable. There is clearly an in-your-face religiousity going on here against the psuedo-religousness of the Dobsons and Bushes.
Any LDSers out there to comment on the show. I would love to hear from folks in the know. How real is this show and its setup?
When I was a hippie I got a ride from a Mormon who was distraught when I took my hood off as I got into his car from the snowstorm in the desert and he saw my long hair. He said he would only take me to the next town. Fine. A few years later I would get a thoroughly wonderful ride from a Mormon. But I still remember my crude attempt to argue with him that communal living of hippies was similar to the Mormon symbology of the bee-hive where every one worked for each other.
It has to be a bit stark, the difference between todays version of families and the communal one being portrayed by Big Love. What must be going through straight religious family's minds as they watch the show?
Ok enough ramble. Now you pitch in.
