This is a continuation thread to discuss the election results. The North American team is mostly asleep by now (or about to be), so we hand the baton to our friends in Europe and to our domestic early risers. Here's the recap:
For most of the evening, the gap between the leading candidate of the leftist PRD, Lopez Obrador, and the trailing candidate of the right, Calderon, has been narrowing in consistent drips and drabs. As of 4 a.m. Eastern Time, with almost 97% of the vote in, it looks like Calderon will pass "AMLO" at about the 98% mark. There is hope that outstanding precincts will reverse the late charge. And some of us think that we see earmarks of fraud. Your continued observations, comments, challenges, and predictions are welcome.
Here's
diary #4 in the Mexican Election diary series, from which you can work backwards and see the others. There's plenty of good stuff there to read, much of which will be good background for this diary.
Here's a good place to get election updates as they continue to trickle in.
Update: My apologies for the lack of diary adornment, but it's very late here on the East Coast and I'm calling it quits for the night. See the previous Mexican Election diaries for some swell graphics. It has been another night like 2000, like 2004, like Hackett, like Ciro, etc., except this one may be more likely to end in bloodshed. There will doubtless be some excellent diaries on this tomorrow and in the days and weeks to come, regardless of whether there are riots, recounts, or recriminations. Our best wishes go to all those in Mexico who want democracy and fairness to prevail there.
Update 2: For the graphic below, send kudos to Kudos.
