Recently, a Pennsylvania
blogger switched his support away from Bob Casey Jr. for
Carl Romanelli, the green party candidate for U.S Senate in Pennsylvania. He sites Casey's pro-life stance behind his reasoning. I, myself, am a progressive from this state and have some complaints about Casey's attitude toward a woman's right to chose. However, we as progressives should recognize that Rick Santorum is the greatest threat to our country. The Democratic Party in Pennsylvania has realized that, which is why they have chosen such a strong candidate to boot Rick Santorum.
I have been battling on the front lines since day one of this election year, reaching out to conservative democrats in
Cambria County. For most of the summer, I've been working on all the major races in my area: Gubernatorial, Senate, and House. Since
Rendell has pulled so far ahead of Swann, my focus has been on Casey v. Santorum. One thing that the conservative democrats love in my area is that Casey is pro-life and strong with unions. One thing that liberal democrats love in my area is the Casey is liked by conservative democrats and strong with unions.
Going into this race, I was skeptical toward Casey. However, the more and more I phone bank, canvass, and talk to democrats as well as republicans in this state, I feel more confident in him. They have had enough of the radical views of Rick Santorum; they have had enough of our state being embarrassed whenever this man steps to the podium and opens his
mouth.
As liberals, we need to look past Casey's shortcoming on abortion, and toward the greater good of this country. The Santorum campaign has been trying to play games with progressives in this state all summer, devoting most of their time with the Green Party and putting a Pro-Choice candidate on the ballot to chip away at Casey's liberal base. I've been talking to many higher-ups in the Casey campaign in charge of looking up the names and addresses on the petition ballot for Romanelli, and what they say is disgusting. Apparently many of the names included deceased people who were addressed to soup kitchens. It's a slap in the face to liberalism, the Democratic Party, and Bob Casey.
We must rally around Bob Casey this November, or this state and country will be paying a huge price this November. The aging population I talk to are worried about their health care and Social Security in the hands of Rick Santorum. My young friends who are entering the military and college are worried about their future in the hands of Rick Santorum. We must not let our country be guided by an intolerant ideology anymore. We must stand up, and we must rally around
Bob Casey!
