I have to admit I watched all of night 2 and found it fairly compelling. Yes, it is filled with factual inaccuracies and has a strong anti-Clinton right-wing bias, but I already knew to expect that Clinton, Berger and Albright were going to get trashed so I didn't let that bother me and tried to just watch it for entertainment value, like it was "24" or something. I also tried to view it through the eyes of a wingnut to see what kind of visceral (i.e. non-thinking) effect it would have. I was surprised to find the message ultimately and unintentionally pro democrat. Maybe that sounds crazy, but follow me below for an explanation....
First of all, I have to say I found it fascinating that Richard Clarke who is made out to be one of the heroes in the film was not even consulted for its production, despite the fact that he is ABC's "terrorism analyst". They even brought him in after the film to comment on terrorism in general. His basic message was that we can do everything in the world to prevent terrorism; military strikes, increased rail, air and port security etc., but until and unless we can win over "hearts and minds" we're screwed and we'll never be safe. He also made a point of saying that our standing in the Muslim world has plummetted in recent years due in no small part to the war in Iraq.
PT911 was created to play on raw human emotion. The painfully obvious underlying message is that the world is divided into 2 different types of people; those that want to "git the terrists" and those who like to hem and haw and wring their hands. Clinton and his entire administration fall into group 2, while the Bush administration conveniently falls into the first group. Bush himself is pretty much a non entity and to be fair, basically gets a pass as opposed to being put on some kind of pedestal. What really struck me when it was over though was this:
The Republicans no longer own 9/11
Things have changed. The entire emotional pull of PT911 is based on the idea of unleashing swift military vengeance in response to terrorist attacks on the U.S. Anyone in the film who feels differently is really just in the way of the good guys. But now the majority of the country feels like the war in Iraq is a distraction from the WOT and the idea that we're getting some kind of retribution for the 9/11 attacks is becoming less and less meaningful for people who are really looking for that to fulfill some need.
This is where the dems come in. We wanna get those guys. Remember them? Al-Qaeda? Usamma Bin Ladin? They're the ones who did THIS.
If Karl Rove and Ken Mehlman want to make this an election about "choice" as opposed to a referendum on Bush, I say BRING IT ON. Here's your choice: Keep our brave soldiers bogged down in Iraq, with targets on their backs, caught in the crossfire of a civil war, OR redeploy our troops and go after the animals that attacked us on 9/11. In fact PT 911 could be seen as a campaign commercial fro the dems. We can use all the same fear-inducing imagery of Al-Qaeda training camps, hijacked airplanes, smiling OBL etc., only this time the message is "WANNA GET THESE GUYS? VOTE DEMOCRAT"
