I expect this will get buried in all the hubbub over the Foley / Hastert scandal...but it needs to be said. There is a message that Democrats need to begin pumping now in order to drive fence-sitters firmly into their camp. It's simple and clear, and has the virtue of being true:
If Republicans win, they will attack Iran. More below...
A few months ago the GOP started pimping the line that Dems would impeach the President if they took the House. The fact that they've stopped saying this means two things: people probably LIKED that idea and the Democrats need to START saying it.
But there is an important class of voters that I believe can be picked up by pushing the idea that if Republicans retain Congress, they will attack Iran. The independant or moderate Republican voter who is disenchanted with the war in Iraq and how the administration has run the war will be very wary of further military adventurism. They may have supported the Iraq war, but are very nearly fed up with it and are damn sure they don't want ANOTHER war.
To capture their votes, Democrats need to start talking about Iran. Point out the failed diplomacy, veiled threats, disputes with the IAEA and how similar this all is to the run-up to invading Iraq. Point to Sy Hersch's and others' reports that an attack is a forgone conclusion...just as the war with Iraq was more than a year prior to invasion.
The best reason to do this is not even that it might help Dems win. It's that it might prevent an attack before the elections. If polls show people responding to this line of reasoning the last thing the administration will do is prove it all true BEFORE the election.
