Upset at Moma Bush and her remarks about protecting her beautiful mind? Outraged at Rove who wants his son to never do menial work? Look beneath for fold for a glimpse at the model for such outrageous attitudes.
Understanding the society that Rove, the Bush family, and the ruling gaggle in Washington see as desirable, one need look no further than an than the PBS series "the Manor House.
The Edwardian era was the period from 1901-1910 under the reign of King Edward VII in Great Britain. At no time since the middle ages did the wealthy live in such contrast with the people who worked for them. Servants existed to fit each tiny job. There was even a boy to sleep under the stairs to act as sort of a human watchdog. Business leaders lived like kings.
Whether it was World War I, or the rise of an alternative to excessive captitalism that brought an end to this society can be debated.
"Upstairs
If by chance you meet a Lower Servant, you should walk past, leaving them un-noticed... you will spare them the shame of explaining their presence"
"Downstairs
Lower Servants: if you meet one of your betters in the house, endeavour to make yourself invisible – 'give room', turn your back, and avert your eyes"
"The rich in this society were brought up to feel that they were superior from the moment they were born." Miss Anson
"I really don't have problem with having servants...if I'm not being served, they don't have a job. This is absolutely magnificent. I'm enjoying it."
