What? "Politics," you say? I'll get to that. Right now, I wanna talk about sub sandwich joints. But trust me, there's a connection.
See, I work near a Subway. I love the place: cool employees, rarely long lines, great deals (especially of you're eating after 5pm) and generally good-tasting food.
I remember the commercials of the early 2000's. Jared came out and said eating there helped him lose weight. His commercials took occasional jabs at the fast food joints like McDonald's and Burger King, but nothing too harsh.
Then Quiznos came on the scene.
At first they seemed innocent; goofy commercials portraying the "We're just a fun place to get subs" angle. But maybe someone in accounting gave the the Board of Directors so bad news or something because for the past year they've been going after Subway like the place owes them money. Every recent commercial I've seen is about how Subway isn't doing this or that as well as Quiznos. The latest one has Quiznos saying they put more meat in their subs; this message gets slammed home with the last "patron," who's female, saying, "Yeah, it's got more meat, and that's what women want." Seriously: WTF?
I would have expected Subway to strike back at Quiznos, but they didn't (at least not in my region). They could have brought up all of the company's dirty laundry. No, they just chugged along: switching Jared for actors like Jon Lovitz on occassion, experimenting with promotional gimmicks, even embracing the concept of atkins-friendly food items. In short, they took the high road.
Not what hell does this have to do with the world of DailyKos? Well, we've got this group of knuckleheads who think they're a news outlet. Recently, they've been exposed (yet again) for the partisan hacks they are. Instead of admitting the truth, they attack the competition relentlessly.
Of course, in this world of media, the competition strikes back. And when they do, this knuckleheaded-group-of-liars-posing-as-a-news-outlet freak out and whine.
Not that I blame them. Like Quiznos, this group has profit issues as well a serious desire to not put forth the whole truth. But just because you're not as popular as the other guy, or doing as well or some other damn thing, it's no reason to take out your frustrations on them. As far as garnering the public's trust, it doesn't help much.
It's one reason (but certainly not the only one) I'm not a fan of this so-called news outlet.
When I see those anti-Subway commercials, it makes me think of them...and this is why I don't like Quiznos.
