I apologize for this short diary that covers ground previously tromped by Kos and others. However, certain warnings bear repeating.
Personally, I like all of the current likely Democratic candidates for president in '08. I would gladly support any of them as the nominee. At present I favor Obama because he seems to have that rare quality of charisma that could unite and inspire the nation in what may be difficult times ahead. Thus it has troubled me greatly to see folks who represent themselves as Obama supporters attempting to drag down other candidates in ways that not only undermine the Democratic brand, but also have potential to harm Obama. Then it hit me:
Beware of wolves in Obama clothing.
Anyone can claim to be an Obama supporter. The Obama campaign has little control over people who claim to be Obama supporters, but who have no actual affiliation with the campaign. They can denounce certain types of behavior, but that often just calls more attention to it and amplifies the negative consequences.
So if I were a Republican operative, here's how I'd undermine Obama: I'd have my hirelings build up credentials as Obama supporters on blogs like dKos. I'd then have them engage in slash-and-trash attacks on other candidates in ways that not only chip at the Democratic brand, but also serve to alienate folks who have recently become active in politics (or are on the verge of becoming active), and who have been turned off in the past by the negativity and dishonesty that they associate with politics.
I'd be looking to alienate the folks who are sick of those who treat political adversaries as enemies. I'd be looking to alienate those who are furious at candidates who talk of faith and moral values, and then disrespect the very same with their hateful behavior towards others. I'd be looking to alienate those who are worried that both parties are corrupt and controlled by wolves who think their lies are "noble" because they are wiser or fitter or more sanctified that everyone else.
For me, living with courage means extending trust and looking for "that of God" in every person. But I also know that things are not always as they appear. So I encourage everyone here to consider the possiblity that we have amongst us various kinds of wolves -- including wolves in Obama clothing. Predators work to divide. That is one way you can recognize them.
