In a clubby body like the Senate that runs on seniority, this is about the strongest punishment the leadership can dole out, short of censure or expulsion.
They must be terrified of what this will do to the fundie turnout, because even in Idaho, being a Republican is almost a sure ticket to being elected.
But I guess the old maxim holds true:
"getting caught with a dead girl or a live boy" is what it will take to finish his political career.
The only difference in this case is that it was a live man instead of a boy.
They must be bearing down on Craig to quit so that a special election can be called because they don't want Craig's name within 1000 miles of the 2008 Senate ballot.
