So says groklaw! What is SCO? What is LINUX you say? Well, this has been a Battle Royale that has been going on for a few years now. The reason why I am posting this, is because I am sure there are a few 'Geek' types that know what Linux, GPL, Open Source and all that stuff is all about.
-- more after the flip --
Basically, Linux is an Open Source operating system that is licensed under this thing called the GPL, (basically an open source license). I am currently just starting to write device drivers for this thing, and I can say that it is truly a well-built robust and very feature laden beast. and best of all .... it is pretty much free!
What happened a few years ago, was there is this company, headed by, (probably the most hated man in the software industry), not Bill Gates, but a fellow by the name of Darl McBride. Anyhow, McBride and SCO et. al. have been pursuing a set of lawsuits against the likes of IBM, Autozone, and Daimler Chrysler, in an attempt to challenge the basic tenets of the GPL license. In fact, SCO, a couple of years ago went so far as to send out a bunch of mail to the affects of "We will not sue you, if you give us money", or something like that.
Needless to say, this whole sordid business did much to shroud Linux, and Open Source under a grey cloud of uncertainty. With these latest developments, it looks as if the forces of Open Source, and the general Linux community will finally prevail, and it will be full steam ahead for Linux!
Say... I have heard rumors, that Microsoft was somehow involved with this, and colluding with McBride. Is that true? Does anyone out there care to comment on this?
