An e-mailed statement from the campaign to reporters quoted Philip Martin as saying he had decided to step down because "the focus of this campaign should be on Fred Thompson's positions on the issues and his outstanding leadership ability," not on his mistakes.
"I deeply regret any embarrassment this has caused," the statement read.

For a couple of days there has been a controversy regarding an adviser and top fundraiser to Fred Thompson's presidential campaign.
Seems he has had a history as a drug dealer, bookie and reluctant taxpayer.
Several Kossacks have diaried in much more detail, but just when it seemed that Phillip Martin would remain with Fred Thompson's campaign, he resigns.

While Thompson is right about mandatory minimum sentencing in drug cases, it seems a bit hypocritical to keep a convicted drug dealers as an adviser and fundraiser.
