I apologize for the "timeliness" of this diary (meaning that this might be old news) but one of the things I like about taking a long break at Thanksgiving is being able to catch up on reading.
While perusing my back issues of Newsweek magazine I came across an interesting tidbit in the November 5th issue of Newsweek on page 20 ( the Periscope section). After seeing this the little lightbulb above me head turned on.
Under the heading IMMIGRATION was a short paragraph by writer Marc Bain describing how "last year the Bush Administration offered a $7.6 Billion contract for the best plan to revamp border security", which Boeing won. It also describes Boeing's project and other proposals with drawn pictures and one sentence blurbs:
Satellite: Raytheon has suggested using an interface based on Google Earth ......
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) including
Aerostat: Proposed by Lockheed Martin, it has a radar system that allows surveillance of large areas.
Predator: Boeing and Lockheed have supplied three so far; a fourth will follow soon.
The "Virtual Fence" with a series of 1800 98 foot tall security towers equipped with sensors and rader-triggered cameras capable of relaying high-quality images to agents.......(9 have been bulit so far)
So there you have it. I have not yet read the book The Shock Doctrine (that will probably be over the Christmas holiday) by Naomi Klein, but I think that the rise of the "immigration issue" might be related to this: You have a "problem" with the "solutions" being provided by the corporate/military industrial complex/privatizing interests.
I cannot do this justice. The illustrations were very eye opening. For some reason, Newsweek doesn't have it in their archives, the only thing I can pull up for the November 5, 2007 issue is the cover story. So check your Newsweek back issues for this or if someone is more computer saavy than me and can find a link that would be great (but I have googled and did ask.com and scoured the Newsweek website itself).
I am surprised that more people haven't noticed this or pointed any of this out before, it seemed pretty obvious to me.
WHAT DO YOU THINK??????
