In MI-02 we will have what hasn't happened in a very long time, a democratic congressional primary. The candidate that I and many others choose to support is Scott Killips. Scott is not a politician. He is an average citizen who knows there are problems, is fed up with the representation we have and that someone has to step up and put themselves out there to voice OUR views and OUR concerns.
Scott is an ardent supporter of Universal Health Care. Scott was diagnosed with a form of Muscular Dystrophy three years ago. With medical bills, copays and prescription bills, even with great coverage his family has been pushed to it's financial and emotional limits. He believes that insurance companies need to be taken out of the picture, and that Health Care is a HUMAN RIGHT, not something reserved for those who can afford it. Scott also believes that is just the first step. That we need to promote and fund wellness and health, not just treat someone once there is a problem. Why? Because he lives it everyday.
Scott is a former UAW Union Steward and believes in promoting and supporting worker's rights and that we must all fight against right to work legislation. He understands full well that Unions helped build up the middle class and helped lower income families raise their standard of living. Scott was fortunate enough to be invited numerous times to attend the Walter Reuther Education Center in his time as a Union Steward. He will fight for American Jobs, American Workers and Fair Trade that will benefit America. Why? Because he lived it.
Scott is against No Child Left Behind. He knows that teachers are forced to teach children what to learn, not how to learn, so the school can achieve a grade level in order to receive funds. He knows that children learn at all different levels, in many different ways, not a one size fits all system of education. He sees his 3 kids getting a worse education than he did, when you expect the next generation to move forward. Why does Scott feel this way? Because he deals with it everyday.
Scott supports reclaiming our civil liberties. He believes that national security is important, but giving up our rights little by little is not the way to do it. Either is trying to force our way of government and our way of life on other countries who posed no threat to us. He believes that national security should start right here, not in a foreign country.
Scott believes in Equal Rights for ALL Americans.
Scott believes in a woman's right to choose.
Scott believes in the opportunities that both Michigan and the country have in creating jobs in taking hold of green technology and industry. Michigan has the educated work force and the means to be in the forefront in helping to create and promote environmentally sound energy sources such as solar, wind and hydro power. He understands that while some jobs are being created by the military industry in Michigan, that the industry relies on us being involved in war and conflict to be sustainable, and that is not acceptable.
Scott believes that we need to end the war in Iraq. We need to bring our troops home who have honorably served their country and that we should have started to bring them home well before now. Scott does not believe in a redeployment of troops to other parts of the world. It is time we take care of America and spend our funds on critical domestic issues and programs that have been pushed to the side to pay for war.
Scott believes that representatives in our government should protect and uphold ALL parts of the Constitution and pledges to do just that.
Why do I support Scott Killips? Because Scott embodies the spirit of the Progressive movement. Because Scott is just like you and me. He believes in the power of people who have a just cause. He believes that we deserve better, that we can and will do better for the people of this great nation. That together we can create change and make a difference. I urge you to join me and many others in supporting Scott in his campaign to win the Democratic nomination in Michigan's Second Congressional District.
