Dennis Kucinich is on WHUS radio being interviewed by cell phone. He's running late to his meet-and-greet appearance at the University of Connecticut. Some of us might feel that in an ideal world, maybe the guy would have a chance to win. As I listen to his interview I'm starting to wonder if he might be able to do so in this world.
I think I've agreed with just about everything he's said so far. As we know, he's been against the Iraq war from the beginning. He believes in real universal health care that doesn't suck up to the insurance companies and actually puts health care of the people first. He wants to repeal Nafta and build back up our manufacturing sector. He also wants to keep impeachment on the table.
It seems to me that universal health care is a truly winning issue as is rebuilding the economy from the ground up and not basing it solely on us some everybody's-gonna-be-a-consultant philosophy. These are real grass roots issues. People WANT to have limits on government snooping and to stop corporate pillaging. There's no reason that Kucinich shouldn't have a chance if not for the media's framing of him. "Oh...he's too LIBERAL." The guy is a populist! The people should theoretically like a populist, right? When you actually listen to his Department of Peace idea it makes a lot of sense. He wants to teach kids conflict-solving tools and make us a less violence-centered society. He's not trying to get rid of our military. He's against the Halliburtons making all the cash and our soldiers getting screwed.
The biggest problem for his candidacy is that our big business-funded election system will make it hard for him to compete. He doesn't have the money of a Perot or a Lamont, but he has ideas that should appeal to a large segment of the population. He's for real. He doesn't sound like a professional politician but a real human being who actually cares about what he's saying. Listening to him on the radio right now, I feel like he has a chance. Word needs to be spread! (I'm not on his payroll by the way!)
