Immigration is an issue that I'm conflicted about, and not well enough versed in the nuances and complexities to offer up an opinion that's any more than a gut instinct that says, "hey, give people a chance and let 'em go where they want." I never feared that an illegal immigrant would come along and steal my job, although I understand the pool of candidates vying for jobs is more diverse and maybe a little bigger by a fraction.
But I never suspected I'd need to fear for my immortal soul! O_O

I've been nothing more than mildly amused by "They took our jaawwwbs!"
But O, ye Gods and Little Fishes--
Don Larsen, chairman of legislative District 65 for the Utah County Republican Party, had submitted a resolution warning that Satan's minions want to eliminate national borders and do away with sovereignty.
Somebody help me out here. When did Satan come up with this cunning plan and since when did the Kingdom of Heaven(TM) start following US immigration laws?
Senator Howard Stephenson, R-Draper, spoke against the resolution, saying Larsen, whom he called a "true patriot and a close friend," was embarrassing the Republican Party.
Speaking as a Democrat...keep talkin' dude.
Larsen was allowed to finish the debate with a one-minute speech.
"If the Democrats take over the country, we will be dead, and we will have abortion and partial-birth abortion and the Republican Party will go into extinction," he said. "Nancy Pelosi and the ACLU would oppose this (resolution)."
I'm kind of disturbed that no one pointed out to this gentleman that abortion is a medical procedure that has to be performed before someone is born to be abortion.
On the more serious side of things. I am trying very hard to understand how someone could be an elected public official and be as fearful, demonizing, and ill-informed as to summon medieval superstition to rounds of applause at a political function.
My grandparents were emigres and did so long before I was born, so I can appreciate that the borders of this country need to be permeable in order to fulfill the little passage on book that that nice green lady in the harbor is holding.
Being a rational person, I know that the amount of illegal immigrants coming into this country is not enough to have any sort of devastating imbalance on the economy that can't be fixed. I've never felt threatened by the presence of illegal immigrants in this country, figuring that if somebody wanted to be here badly enough to break the law, it's 99% because they like it here.
What I don't understand is why this issue seems to be a rally-point? I don't normally post diaries--I'm not nearly as well-informed as most of the fine regular diarists here. But when I saw this article, I had to post a diary, because I just can't wrap my head around it. My first and lasting impression was to ask, "how do these people put pants on in the morning?" Trying to figure out how they think like they do and govern...it boggles.
