There has recently been much discussion about John Edwards and his comments that he wants to limit the debates to a smaller number of participants. I have defended Edwards comments saying that all he wants is to have a more substative debate.
Well today he showed just that, agreeing to a smaller debate with just him Rep. Kucinich and Senator Clinton.
"I think it’s just the nature of having a lot of candidates," Edwards said. "The hard thing ... is trying to find a way to not have this be a sound-bite debate."
Edwards accepted host Chris Matthews’ challenge to face off with Clinton and Kucinich on "Hardball," but only if the show would arrange similar small discussions that included the rest of the Democratic field.
I personally think this a great idea.. The only thing I wish they had done differently was it should have been 3 randomly picked nominees debating each other and not negotiated.
However this is a step in the right direction towards debates that are not about 30 second soundbites but about the substance of the issues. Something all three of these candidates have and want to discuss.
To me this can only be a good thing!
