G'morn all!
Looks like a great morning on this wonderful planet, which has not fully yet been tainted by Bush, or nuked by temporary prez Nutzi Cheney...
The usual gang is out and about, as will I from time to time as I get ready for a summer trip to the Swedish countryside. So, as always, this is a community effort and we'll rely our collective grey cells to solve whatever home repair issue you have, want to have, or...
I'll put the coffee on- some really good stuff I bought in Paris last week, so, please join us below the fold.
Today, on my drawing board, is to prepare to finish my/our little walk in closet I destroyed a while back in hopes of putting something in a little more, well accommodating or designed into the space. When we first bought the apartment, the existing room was wallpapered white over bright yellow paint and had the normal 2 level shelves supported by 1x4s beneath.
For some strange reason, they were painted flat chocolate brown on the sides and on top and I thought had to go, and they did, as I was pulling everything else out of the apartment. And, as you can see in the pic, there were two types of trim, one to cover up the vinyl (now gone) that replaced the floor before it.
When we originally decided to pull out all the vinyl and polish the concrete, we pulled out the 'wall,' (two quater/eigth of an inch particle board panels) that separated the walk in closet from the main hall closet. We've thought to replace it with something a little better and thicker as it turned the closet into a drum of sorts when anything bumped against it, perhaps when someone was making noise in the space. A few options include a nicer quality plywood- pine or birch, or veneered mdf, at least on the side facing the hall closet, something that may over time match the aged pine look...
At present, there is a bit more spackling to do since the plaster walls have not been coated with a finer structure- they had perhaps been intended only for wallpapering, and then we have to sand the entire space (fun) and paint it several times, and spackle a few little bits that we will most likely have missed the first time- even with a structured brush, marks in the wall will still be evident.
As all this has been going on, we've been trying to make up our minds on how to design the closet shelves- the space is about 6'x'9x40", we'll need to hang clothing at an appropriate height, store stuff we don't need up high, and store daily clothing lower. So, through all these thoughts, trying to keep things pragmatic for the moment, the questions arise as to 'how do you store clothing?' What is the right size and shape for a space to store socks? Folded shirts? Jeans? Underwear?
On the other side of the closet space, we also have a window looking outside towards the water (which, unfortunately, the gf and I are not tall enough to enjoy:( ) but the gf has been flirting with the idea of having some little structure beneath it so that she could site on it and look out at the water.
Also, to keep in mind, our curious rabbit has also a claim on the space. Since we've taken out the wall, it's been on of his favorite places to explore, so we've been thinking about making the small space on the left side openable through a little trap door, one that we could close without it really being noticable.
Here are two inspiration pics for the possible design, one of a film coated plywood that we've seen around, that looks interesting, and a plywood cabnit, Dutch I think it was, that has a nice color scheme.
We'll see what happens.
So, have at it.
