The original Twilight Zone is one of my favorite shows ever. I started watching it when I was eleven and I've been hooked ever since. Until fairly recently, I used to watch whole chunks of the marathon every fourth of July, and I always discovered an episode that I had missed or found one that had taken on a new meaning or that I understood a little bit better since becoming a bit older and wiser.
One of my favorite episodes of the Twilight Zone is about a town held hostage by a monster...but the monster of this town isn't just an ordinary, "run of the mill", monster, it's actaully a spoiled 10 year old boy who possesses the ability to control the weather, read minds, change people into horrible things, and generally wreak havoc on people's lives. The town citizens are so afraid of this little boy that they refuse to criticize (either mentally or out loud) his actions. Indeed, no matter what this monster does, they always say "It was good that you did that Billy...real good." Virtually word for word, every time. And should this boy create something that they actually can't bear, they beg him, plead with him to wish it to the cornfield.
With Bush's recent commute (and future pardon) of Libby, coupled with all the other things that BushCo. has done to systematically undermine and destroy democracy, the United States, and the world (at least the world that isn't part of the BushCo "chosen" few) it dawned on me that the people who were making excuses for Bush and this administration where just like those people in that town. A gutless, confused, group caught in a cycle of denial, fear and self-loathing who can only say, in one form or another, "It's good that you did that BushCo, real good." And whenever this corrupt bunch does something that they can't bear to comprehend, these enablers have it wished to the cornfield. Constitution shredded? Wish it to the cornfield (or as it's called in the "real world" media blackout land). Soldiers dying? Wish them to the cornfield. Innocent people being treated like terrorists? Wish them to the cornfield.
But at least the town people had a small measure of an excuse, they were after all, dealing with supernatural forces. These real world enabling cowards however, are dealing with ordinary people who are limited to the power given to them by the very people (i.e. the media) who are making excuses for them.
In other words, the people making these excuses for BushCo are pretty much imprisoning themselves and, unfortunately, others by affording BushCo more power than they warrant or actually possess in reality. And what's really weird and odd, is that they are doing so to their own detriment. For example, the neoconservative movement, and to a large extent the conservative movement is clearly on the rocks at the moment, and reports are indicating that, for better or worse, more and more people trust and are turning to outside internet sources for news vs. "traditional" media outlets.
But like the people in the town, these enablers are to afraid, to comfortable, to uninspired to realize that they are in effect ,destroying themselves and living a life worse than death by encouraging and aiding the vicious vicious people in this administration. Clearly, they have willingly sold their lives and their souls for the appearance of safety, and as such, it is also clear that it wouldn't matter if BushCo was revealed to be the minions of Satan himself, they would always be there saying "it's good that you did that BushCo...real good."
