My mother just called me to tell me that she was watching CNN and she was very perplexed. Hamid Karzai, the Afghan President, has just put on a western style suit jacket over his traditional clothing.
I'm not sure if this fits rule #2 for "substantive diary" but I felt compelled. I think it's substantive in that it's another odd decicison by someone somewhere in the Bush administration.
You can see the outfit on the front page of cnn.com. He was speaking at a press conference with Bush. It's a full body shot, so you can see just how bizarre the outfit is. Was it truly his decision?
If not, was this some attempt to make him look "less terroristy?" Is it an attempt to make him appear more serious in the eyes of the MSM? I mean the absurdity of that thought would be immediately dismissed, were it not for the political theatre we are subjected to on a daily basis and the target audience for that theatre.
Karzai, incedentally, is one handsome dresser. Usually.
My first thought was of the rent-a-jacket scenes from all of those screwball 80s comedies when the slouchy slob winds up in a fancy restaurant and has to throw a Hugo Boss dinner jacket over his Chicago Bulls jersey, etc.
This is a WTF diary, nothing more.
