So our Dems have scurried out of The Beltway to head home ready to meet with their constituents, huh? Well, as another diarist seems to suggest today: good luck finding your rep to talk to. If they're a Democrat, the party we Kossacks are dedicated to elect and keep electing, they should be hard to find, to conceal their shame (if any actually have any?) Doesn't the ridiculous failure of the Democrats in Congress during the session just ended give anyone else here qualms about being taken for granted as part of the Democrats base? I feel completely supportive of all the issues discussed at Daily Kos, but are we really serving those interests when at the end of the day we plan to vote Democrat and they can count on us to be there. How has that advanced our causes in the past, how will it do so now?
So to the title of this diary, we have a new surveillance law courtesy of another Democrat leadership cave-in. They were bamboozled by the biggest bozos ever to grace the White House. No progress on Iraq, and while the Dems console themselves with their inevitable presidential victory next Fall, does it not occur to any of them what a real quagmire will look like when the al-Maliki government falls (perhaps during the summer's vacation?) and the discussion of Iraq withdrawel will become passe. When there is no government there, the US will be under a moral and legal obligation to provide security and economic support and in our own national interests, we will have no option to leave, we will be completely stuck in the quicksand and the next President will choke on it.
And what have our Dems accomplished this session with their new found "power?" So did they restore Habeas Corpus for us? Reform the Patriot Act? Reestablish FISA control over the NSA? Stop the CIA from torture? Close Guantanamo? Need I go on? Instead they were completely side-winded by Bad Bart, the boy president from Crawford, who pulled the rug out from under Reid and Pelosi and showed them to be the foolish, incompetents they are. But do I read anything on Kos about changing the Democrat leadership in order to continue to earn our support? No, we just continue our hopeless chants of Impeach: Gonzales, Cheney, Bush himself...and the Democrats say we're too busy to do that, sorry "base."
I can find no Democrats in Congress to give kudos to, none. The closest would be Leahy, Conyers, and Waxman, but aside from making a lot of noise, at the end of the session what came of it? Subpoenas that won't be enforced and that took far too long to be put on the table even. Never has a president and his Attorney General told the Congress to take a hike like these two have and yet they end the session with the NSA highlight victory in their pockets and head back to Texas to celebrate. Gonzales perjures himself openly, and they can't even impeach him?
So please tell me I missed a big one, the restoration of Habeas Corpus? I would really rather be red-faced here today and be told that my Dems did accomplish that and I missed it, than to have to conclude what a weak-willed, sorry excuse for a party I've been blindly supporting and will be asked to continue supporting blindly! Hillary or Obama, that's what we're reduced to, aren't we an effective force for the future of our democracy?
