Yesterday I posted a diary in which I asked the Kos community for help in seeking treatment for a boy at my hospital. The response was simply overwhelming.
Within just a few hours of posting the diary, there were over seventy responses. Some contained suggestions, others simply good wishes. All were welcome, and all were deeply, deeply appreciated.
By late yesterday afternoon I had already spoken by telephone to representatives from organizations who believed they would be able to help. I also had several communications by email. These were doctors and social workers and churchgoers and just everyday folk who wanted nothing more than to help a little boy who none of them had ever met, nor likely ever would.
Like most of us, I have had days when I've been so disheartened by the state of the world that I've been ready to give up. But the outpouring of support from this community is proof that there are good people out there, and that there's always reason to hope.
I spent the better part of last evening responding to emails and handing out mojo for the supportive comments and suggestions. I hope I didn't miss anyone. If I did, please know that it wasn't because I didn't value your support. Thank you.
I'd also like to take a moment to specifically thank a few people who took the time to comment or contact me:
- First, to DrSteveB, who pointed me in the direction of the Ryan White Program. I urge everyone to read his recent diary on obtaining free or low-cost medical care for any condition. You do your profession proud, Doctor.
- To USexpat Ukraine, with whom I've been speaking by email, who has offered to utilize his knowhow and connections in Ukraine to set up treatment for the boy when he returns home.
- To exmearden, who offered to set me up with a connection at the Gates Foundation.
- To revsue, who volunteered to raise money through her small community church in Massachusetts. Many people – myself included – have argued the evils of organized religion. It's nice to be reminded that some people of faith take the notion of loving their fellow man seriously.
- To high uintas, who offered to help even though her own health coverage is very much in question.
- And, of course, to Daily Kos itself, which provides a forum for so much more than just talking politics.
If I left you off the list, please know that it is most assuredly not because I didn't appreciate all your efforts and support.
Daily Kos community, you probably saved a little boy's life yesterday. And that, more than anything I can think of, is the best proof – living proof – that Daily Kos is nothing even approaching a "hate site."
Thank you.
