I moved to the Wilmington, NC area recently and have a health insurance problem--almost no doctors accept the plan. This leads to my being overcharged for their services. I'll explain below.
Doctors seem to have many fee schedules--different ones for Medicare, Medicaid, each different insurer, and for the uninsured. Two doctors list themselves as participants of my plan, but when I got to their offices, tell me they just withdrew because payment wasn't timely. My insurer, GHI, says I shouldn't have paid them because they are still participants--but the doctor's office insists they're not. I'm holding the bag while they duke it out, but realize my money is probably lost.
Before someone suggests I should have called first, I did and was told if we're listed, we accept it. GHI also told me before I went that I'm covered. It's either a scam, incompetence, or error---sounds as if Bush runs the system.
Back to the rates, because the doctors' offices claim I'm not insured, they charge me a rate much higher than what they'd expect the insurer to pay. So, doctor gets more, insurer pays nothing, and I'm suspicious.
Finally, on a personal note, if any ex New Yorkers have GHI and live near Wilmington, please so note here. Maybe we can join together to get coverage --just as some have done in Myrtle Beach.
