The reason I'm asking is because of a conversation I had with my mother today, and she said, "I might vote for Hillary!" I was flabbergasted! I was floored! I was shocked!
If you knew my mother you'd realize just how incredible this is, almost on par with the Earth spontaneously shifting on it's axis. Ma has been a hardcore Limbaugh fan for years and thinks the sun shines out of Sean Hannity's ass. But something happened.....
So what changed? Health insurance.
After her husband retired from Raytheon last year, they went on Cobra to the tune of $700+ a month. They just received a notice in the mail that the rate is going up to over $1000 a month starting next month.
She will be 65 in September, and is going to try and wing it without insurance till then when she can get on Medicare/Medicaid. As she put it, "It's a choice between groceries and insurance." She also can't get on other insurances plans because she survived lung cancer about 10 years ago. She's stuck.
Over the last few years we've had several political arguments. I've always told her she's not really conservative because she supports gun laws, is not religious, and supports a woman's right to choose. But she listens to the muck spewers like Limbaugh and convinced herself she was a conservative.
As I told her today, Republicans tend to vote against their own best self-interest, and this was a classic example. I also reminded her that Hillary tried to work on this problem 15 years ago!!!
So after all the crap like illegal wars, exposing CIA agents, and thousands of corpses, it took something personal to bring the point home just how things really are.
If she is a typical non-religious Republican, I think this bodes well for the Democrats chances this November.
