He's on my campus at Florida International University. I stumbled upon his speech.
The lovable Senator from Connecticut spoke on behalf of John McCain. He's spoke about McCain being the strongest on the Economy, about National Security, and on how he was an ethical man (whe cited Habeus Corpus later on and how he came to a balanced view".
I got angrier and angrier. Then he began to take questions from the audience. After 4 or 5 pointless questions (Does he believe McCain's Iraq strategy works [he does], should puerto rico become a state [he's not sure, and McCain hasn't released a statement on it].
They were about to end the questions, when a bit of drama occured.
I'm the nationwide coordinator for Democracy For America's Campus Corps. I lead a group on my campus. The College Republicans President did not want me to ask anything. He knows me well enough. but Joe Lieberman spotted me in the corner and let me ask a question.
And I asked him that after saying "I want Democrats to be back in the majority in Washington and elect a Democratic president in 2008. This man [Ned Lamont] and his supporters will frustrate and defeat our hopes of doing that." how can we trust you to keep your word now? What's your response to your constituents who DID believe you were a good enough Democrat? And why should we take your endorsement now seriously?
He looked a bit paler than previously. He stated that he had endorsed McCain because despite his friends Sen. Clinton & Sen. Obama, he felt they were not strong enough to galvanize the American people. Apparently a 71 year old man who has had health problems is enough to galvanize America. He said they were not strong enough on national security, and that they were good, but not AS good. And that his constituents know him and his policies well enough. He also said that this was the first time he'd been questioned on it.
Later as he was leaving I asked him why he caucused with Democrats, considering he lies to that party endlessly. All he could muster out was that in Democratic primaries, not to be perjorative, but people are more to the left, just as people are more to the right in republican primaries...
I want you guys to start asking him the tough questions some more.
By the way, I get Rudy at 9.45 PM tonight.
