Vancouver, WA--A friend of mine returned last night from being trained for her caucus and told me she had been instructed that people who register at the caucus site tomorrow should not be allowed to participate in choosing candidates. She then tried to find out from another site coordinator if this was accurate, and that person also told her on-site registrants may not help pick the candidates. I also know that a third site coordinator is stating the same.
Unfortunately, these site coordinators are being directly contradicted by the information put out by the state party.
More below.
This web page by the Washington State Democrats seems to state that same day registrants should be allowed to participate:
Voter registration. Register online or change your address and other voting information. Click here to see how this impacts your participation in the Caucuses. You can also register at and then participate in your Caucus if you are not able to register beforehand.
I've tried to explore the relevant rules from both the national and state delegate selection plans at my personal blog, but time is short and I fear people are going to be turned away tomorrow.
I know I haven't posted a diary here in ages, but that's because I've been off blogging on state and local issues. But if anyone in Washington state can help me better understand the issues surrounding the participation of same-day registrants, I would appreciate it.
To be clear, I am trying to reserve judgment about all of this in the hopes it will be cleared up today.
