I know Kos speaks highly of Chuck Todd, and maybe that's usually justified, but Jeebus take a look at this
From Media Matters via Atrios:
TODD: -- this was not a one-time slip and so, you know, this just shows you how much bank -- how much of the foreign policy experience stuff he's got in the bank, because had Clinton or Obama done something like this, this would have been played on a loop, over and over, and would have absolutely hurt them politically.
Awesome. So the fact that McCain is an "expert" in foreign relations (because he says so, and why would he lie? He's a straight-talker), it doesn't hurt him when he's wrong about one of the most fundamental issues facing the country he purports to be ready to lead.
It would be one thing if Todd was saying that McCain's vast bank of foreign policy expertise made it obvious that this was a one-time slip of the tongue. That would be akin to a mathematician solving a blackboard-sized problem and in the end messing up the square root of 16.
Todd is acknowledging that this is NOT the first time McCain has made this mistake, but it doesn't matter because he's so knowledgeable he doesn't have to actually have command of any facts.
I guess it really is true that being in favor of war automatically makes you knowledgeable and "serious" in our media stars' eyes.
TODD: For now, McCain is showing the advantages of not having the media very focused on his candidacy right now.
Right now? They'll be not-very-focused on his candidacy right up through November. It won't stop them from praising him, though.
Once they get some Wet-Naps to wipe the barbecue sauce from their hands, of course.
UPDATE: Many commenters have made the point that Todd was speaking of media perception, that he was simply conveying the reality that McCain is getting a pass from the media. I see this point; it may be true. I would believe it a lot easier, though, if he ever used the words "perception," "pass" or even "media." Would've been a lot more persuasive, too.
