(Fourth in a continuing series started by TravelerBill on Stephen Colbert's Pennsylvania Straw Poll, Democralypse Now.)
Stephen Colbert is conducting a Pennsylvania Primary Straw poll, in which candidate's supporters make a tax deductible donation to a PA school. The candidate with the most money raised will be declared the winner.
The original goal of $66,000 was blown through by Obama supporters in less than one week. A new goal has now been set at $100,001.
Obama's supporters have raised over $77,000, with more than 1100 donors. Clinton's supporters have not yet met the $66,000 mark, with just over $13,000 raised by 112 donors.
That means that, in one week, supporters of both Democratic candiates have raised more than $90,000. This is a big deal to those kids in PA, whose classrooms are using the money for books, A/V equipment - you know, all those things a responsible government would be paying for.
How much have McCain supporters raised? Zippo.
Unlike our Republican counterparts, supporters of the Democratic Presidential candidates are putting their money where their ideals are and helping schoolchildren get the supplies they need.
This primary fight has gotten ugly, but let's not lose sight of the big picture. Democrats have two good candidates, and are working to make a difference in the lives of schoolchildren who don't have the tools they need to get a good education. Republicans don't care about the kids in PA, and have McBush the Maverick who thinks that the war in Iraq should last forever. So let's settle our differences and give money to a worthy cause.
Are you backing Obama? Help get donations in his name up to $100,001 and blow Hillary away. In the Clinton camp? Get donations in her name up to $66,000. Show your support for your candidate and "vote" in the straw poll. Donate $1, $5 or $10 (or more, if you can) in the name of Clinton or Obama, and let's see if we can't do some good while we fight for our candidate.
