John McCain's speech the other night, you know the one, in front of a green screen, bad teleprompter-reading skills...that mess? It made me wonder, is the GOP trying to ensure that he loses in November? More after the jump.
Months ago, when the GOP nomination was still up in the air, people like Rush and Ann Coulter were spouting off about how they couldn't stand for McCain to get the nomination. They thought it might more desirable to have a Dem be president the next four years so said Dem could be blamed for all the terrible things that would surely happen.
I haven't read much about who is heading up McCain's campaign or their merits. But usually the goal of the person is to show the candidate in the best possible way. That speech the other night clearly wasn't it. So I began thinking that maybe the GOP decided that they would sacrifice the White House for four years and get to say 'See, we told you so!'. But I think they were counting on Hillary being our candidate. As Robert in WV diaried yesterday, now that Barack is the nominee, they're scared.
I'll be the first to admit that I'm far from the most enlightened about political strategy, so I'd gladly like to hear from others about this theory.
Update: I understand what some are saying about not taking our opponent or the GOP for granted. I'm ready to work my tail off as much as everyone else is to get Barack into the White House. And I will. I plan to give what I can to the DNC and Obama's campaign in terms of contributions and time.
