Wow, just when you thought you had seen it all, the Nevada GOP has had to cancel their state convention, because they could not get more then 300 state delegates to confirm they would attend and they needed 675 for a quorum. Talk about pathetic:
Citing a lack of interest, the Nevada Republican Party has called off its state convention and will instead pick its delegates to the national convention by private conference call.
The state party broke up its original convention in April when supporters of Ron Paul hijacked the proceedings and tried to elect delegates for their candidate to the national GOP convention in September. Party officials tried to reconvene on July 26, but they needed a quorum of 675 and received only 300 RSVPs, according to local reports.
The more I read the links in the articles, the more I think this is some spoof from the Onion, but it isn't:
Longtime Nevada Republicans said they've never experienced an aborted state convention.
"I don't ever remember such chaos in the party," said Barbara Vucanovich, a former congresswoman who has been involved in party politics since the early 1950s. "Frankly, its an embarrassment for our state and also makes it difficult for John McCain. He needs all the electoral votes he can get."
The dispute is almost certain to end up in court.
This convention would have finished off the one they started in April which was never finished because of the Ron Paul problem. Guess it is just like the GOP to once again leave something unfinished.
I guess when things are bad, they are really bad. Nevada is a state we need to win, and with the Nevada GOP in such a mess, well, time for those of us in CA to do some traveling.
The GOP is in trouble, they are sinking fast and it is our job to help them by throwing them an anchor ; )
Truth is stranger then fiction sometimes.
UPDATE: How about for some continuing Irony about the GOP? How did I find this little tidbit of information?
I went to RightOnLine which is hosting a Right Blogger Convention in Austin, right now (yes, at the same time as ours). Then I go to their "Blog" and find a post that has a link to coverage of their convention, so I click over there, and at the bottom of the page are related links, one being the article on the Nevada GOP canceling their convention.
So, in trying to get the word out about their convention, the good folks at RightOnLine led me to the article about the Nevada GOP convention, which is now spreading throughout the net thanks to you all.
I think our Net guys should send a huge thank you to the RightOnLine folks.
Talk about the gang that couldn't shoot straight.
