So now McCain's people are lobbing out the notion that he and Palin have "chemistry" - like Bill and Al, no less - and that McCain's staff is "seriously considering" pairing the two on the trail through Election Day. Well, no wonder...
Who really wants to see McCain by his lonesome, anyway?
NBC/NJ's writer, Matthew Berger, notes today that a McCain/Palin aide said it's an idea in the making (translation: an "ease-in" for the press) to keep the two on the road and NOT allow them to separately campaign.
The aide said the two have developed a strong chemistry together and will likely utilize it through joint rallies. He likened it to the chemistry Bill Clinton and Al Gore had in 1992, suggesting it was instinctive.
"Sometimes these vice presidential selections, the pairings, work in a magical way," the aide told reporters on the Palin campaign plane, on condition of anonymity. The plane is en route to Fairbanks, AK, where Palin will see her eldest son off to military service.
The aide said there has been increased enthusiasm for the campaign as well, and the pair has been able to connect on energy and economic issues, as well as change. "And we like the images," he said.
"There's just a huge amount of enthusiasm," he said. "It clicks."
Horseshit. We know from our own diarist, acluca, who witnessed and reported on a recent McCain/Palin event, that this so-called "chemistry" is anything but:
She should be out on her own by now, why is she still with McCain? His interactions with her are still awkward, and seeing it in person makes it even harder to watch. Of course the crowd was too busy cheering. But their chemistry is lacking.
...Another thing I noticed was this was a Palin crowd. This was not a McCain crowd. People came to see her, not for John McCain. Rumors started going around that she wasn’t coming, and people started to get pissed. I was surprised. You are supposed to like Number One more than Number Two, right?
My strong suspicion is McCain - on his own - would draw a mere handful of people compared to Palin, who's now the rock star on HIS team. And without her, he'd look mighty old, neglected, foolish and abandoned.
The GOP is noticing...
