Forgive an extremely short diary.
David Foster Wallace is dead. The author of "Infinite Jest," "The Broom of the System," "Another Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again," and other brilliant works, he was 46.
His wife came home and found that he had hanged himself.
The story in the LA Times
Forgive the short diary, but this is an important loss. David Foster Wallace was truly one of his generation's most important writers, even if he never cracked a best-seller list.
David was a friend of mine. His books were strange, dense, incredibly literary and obtuse. Sometimes the footnotes were longer than the chapters. He had a very clear view of a fractured world.
There was nothing overtly political in David's work but every word he wrote was political. He often said he was terrified of the future he foresaw for us.
Good bye, David. We will miss you.
