OK, so a number of you may say I'm really crossing the line here and pre-supposing some outlandish motives. I'm prepared to take the fall. But I am wondering, yes, wondering if this refusal of most GOP House members to support the bailout plan today is just temporary...until the VP Presidential debates are underway or over.
This thought crossed my mind when House Minority Whip Roy Blunt, who is negotiating for the Republicans, was quoted in a news conference this past Saturday as suggesting a deal might not make it by Sunday evening.
"Well, it needs to happen by Sunday, if it doesn't happen by Sunday, it could be Thursday or Friday of next week. There may be a point when we realize that the majority that’s in control isn’t going to do this on their own and come up with the bill that Republicans in the House can vote for."
That "Thursday or Friday" phrase stuck in my mind because there's one major thing happening Thursday evening - the VP Presidential debates. And there's not a soul absorbed in the world of US politics who doesn't know that Sarah Palin ain't doing so well thus far in her news interviews and is not likely to do exceptionally well Thursday night. What better time to orchestrate a massive ballyhoo over an adopted bailout plan than when the McCain campaign's in a really bad way? Blunt has already tried to sell us on the notion that McCain did a great thing parachuting into DC late last week in an effort to "bring Democrats and Republicans together" for the sake of us fine Americans. So much for THAT. And in the meantime, this coming Thursday night's looming debate could quite possibly spell much more trouble for Blunt's buddy John...
So there's my theory, folks, wild as it may seem. After McCain's bizarre behaviors, is it really so wild?
