Maybe most of the people on this site will think its lame, but I have to admit to my addiction to "The Amazing Race".
During football season, the episodes all end up getting a little delayed. So when I turned on the TV tonight to catch the show, instead the CBS channel was still showing the end of tonight's episode of "60 Minutes".
I feel like it's just a cliche, that Andy Rooney's final commentaries are supposed to be a folksy bit of observation from yesteryear. But the one tonight was really maybe over the line.
It's now on the website, here
Tonight, all he could talk about was how he really wished that the candidates of today sounded more just like the standard old dead white guys who used to always be in charge.
He started by talking about presidents and their names. How the the great presidents all had names that sounded appropriately presidential, like Washington and Lincoln and Roosevelt.
This then flowed into him pointing out that 2 guys with the last names Obama and Huckabee had won in Iowa. His point was, aren't those names just ridiculous? Ha ha.
He went on to say that imagine if Guiliani had been the first president. There might be a city called Guiliani, DC! Ha ha.
He harkened back to the good old days, when presidents and candidates had solid, i.e. white and anglo, last names. The kind of names that are appropriate to use for things like naming schools and buildings. Not like, ha ha, Kucinich!
I don't think it's available yet on the 60 Minutes site, but it should be up sooner or later.
I'm not sure how the American public benefits from commentary like this. But I guess that's what they pay Andy Rooney to do. Remind us of how things used to be so much better in the old days. Thanks, Andy.
