That was a response from one of my relatives on why she was voting for John McCain over Barack Obama. Now this relative is not uneducated, she has a college degree hell she even has a PhD in Molecular Biology. She is however of Indian descent and also a Hindu. And this is a view you see among a lot of Hindus that most if not all Muslims are terrorists, that Islam is a religious of violence, and that they will continue to attack us if not stopped. Now I'm not saying all Hindus are like this many are not (including yours truly). But this is view that quite a few of them hold.
It seems so strange that two groups who are anti-Muslim are the uneducated masses from the southeast and Indians that are Hindu. Indian Hindus are almost all educated with 60% of them in professional jobs. They look very similar to most Muslims and culturally share some similar aspects as well. These two groups do not seem like they should agree on any issue but on this one they do.
Hindus who follow this belief seem to follow the manta "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" on this issue and I do not think that this is wise. While these people may share the view of Hindus they also probably think the same of Hindus as the do of Muslims. These Hindus will end of getting burned if they continue to look at these guys as allies.
It is sad to see Senator Obama having to defend himself from these attacks but some in the GOP are relentless. The proper response to the snarls of he's a Muslim is so what if he is? Unfortunately that would be political suicide right now. Hopefully we can improve in the future.
