Last night on CNN Anderson Cooper's Show someone mentioned that at this time (October 5, 2000) in the 2000 campaign Gore led in the polls 51% to 40% for Bush.
I wasn't very politically aware during that campaign or else I do not remember that Gore was so far ahead of Bush in the polls so close to the election. So I started freaking out. Could the same thing happen to Obama?
I desperately need someone to "talk me down".
I probably wouldn't even blog my fears here but today, after thinking about the CNN comment all day today while I shelved books (I'm a librarian), I got home to read this e-mail from the Obama campaign:
Barack is up in the polls right now, but a lot can happen in the next three weeks.
In October of 2000, Al Gore was up by double digits -- and it all came down to a handful of votes in a single state.
This year, that state could be Washington -- and you have a unique opportunity to make the difference for Barack.
Ah..hhh, why is everyone joining into my current paranoia?
What happened in 2000? Did Gore have a terrible debate? Did the economy crater? Was he swift-boated? Why did the numbers change so dramatically?
Take a look at the 2000 tracking polls here: Gore tracking poll
Now please, talk me down (ala Rachel Maddow)
