Joe Biden is going to be fine. We know he is eminently more qualified for the job than Sarah--In what respect, Charlie?--Palin. This debate is a joke on every conceivable level, but we have to play along. We're stuck going through this charade because the Republicans put a dummy on the ticket. As I've said on many occasions, a snake could get over the bar that's been set for the lunatic Palin, but here we go anyway! There's no way around it and that's fine. The point of this diary is to prepare for the days to come, when we know the inevitable spin may leave some of us ready to tear out our hair.
One thing that we can also count on is Sarah Palin getting in a couple of good zingers that will be played ad nauseum. That is going to drive us nuts. She will also probably get a chance to talk about her family, and she will sound endearing and warm. Get ready. She may even do the unthinkable and tell the truth about how she's felt about her portrayal in the media. She may say she was taken off guard but that she's hopeful the American people will trust her. She'll sound honest and again, warm. Yes, she's a complete idiot, but she may not have a completely horrible night. So, here's what WE need to do:
- Like I even need to say this: Get and stay online to rag her into the ground on every blog you can. We know she's going to flub up here and there. Get those clips out and send them around the universe. Do it immediately.
- Of course, participate in every, stupid online poll and say Biden won. Again, a no-brainer.
- Donate if you can tonight so that the campaign can brag about huge numbers after the debate.
- Here's where the really hard part comes--especially for worry-warts like me: Just know, deep down, that even if Palin knocks it out of the park (unlikely), but if she does well enough that the MSM fools SAY she knocked it out of the park, that a great deal of damage to her has already been done. Prepare yourself to be annoyed and irritated beyond all belief, but KNOW AND TRUST that by next Thursday--one week's time--NO ONE will be talking about the debate. We'll already be gearing up for the next Obama/McCain brawl. Tonight will NOT change the game. It will be a two or three day story if she's good, and a NEVERENDING story if she sucks. But either way, she won't change the game negatively FOR US. Too many people have already written her off. One 90 minute performance isn't going to cut it. So, prepare yourself for Morning Joke to help her out if she at all sounds competent, but know that it won't last. This is the hardest thing for me to do. It's hard for me to listen to crap and not get a "sky is falling" attitude. But what I've learned throughout this journey--because of Barack Obama--is that our steady approach never fails. No matter how silly the season gets--we stay focused.
Okay--bring it in, everyone! FIRED UP AND READY TO GO!!
