I just received a robo-call from an outfit that wants to lower my interest rate. Well, in spite of being on the "DO NOT CALL" list I get these from time to time. What was unusual about this one is that the caller ID showed that the call came from my own telephone number! What's the problem? Over the break and read on...
I rely on caller ID as one of the lines of defense against fraud, especially requests for info that could lead to identity theft. I was not aware that it could be forged. I'm not sure what to do about it since I hung up before they told me who was making the call. While I don't know if any law was broken by the caller I'm a little concerned since my phone number is part of my "identity" and someone just used it without my permission. With all the robo-calling going on and the he said / she said finger pointing this is just one more thing to be aware of before you draw any conclusions about exactly who is slinging the mud. Comments / suggestions are welcome.
