My question is: Since Obama is half black and half white (I know, a stupid postulate, but unfortunately we haven't evolved sufficiently), why is he referred to as black, rather than white?
I chuckle at the thought of him having won the nomination and then declaring himself to be a white person for the general election. It would have been hilarious to watch the absolute confusion and comic contortions that would have ensued from the McCain camp.
What would they have said?
"You can't be white!"
"But you're black!"
"You have to pick one; you can't flip-flop!"
It would have been a fabulous demonstration of how absurd and ridiculous the whole race construct is in this country. Our children understand this more than we do, and because of the faith I have in our children, I believe we can some day get to Dr. King's Promised Land. We're not there yet, but now it feels possible.
