My wife and I live in a small town north of Boston in a neighborhood full of Obama signs (and a few McCain). We have heeded the call on a few occasions to travel north into New Hampshire to knock on doors for Obama and the Democratic team. Because my wife is from a small town just outside Dayton, OH we are doing our swing state project there. Tomorrow we will travel to Ohio to spend Saturday, Sunday and Monday working for Obama.
As Massachusetts folks it will be fun to lend a hand somewhere competitive that can make a difference on Tuesday. I wrote a light hearted diary earlier in the week about my beloved Phillies and how their projected World Series victory would herald the end of the conservative era as their victory in 1980 occurred just a couple weeks before Reagan and the R's sweep in 1980. So we are spending a little time and money to work three days to make the rest of the prediction come true. We want Senator Obama to win.
The polls have tightened in the last few days as many of us thought they might. It is not easy turning a corner on history. But this campaign is as much about us as it is Senator Obama and the history we can make together. I have worked for progressive change in this country since the mid-1970's. I was too young to have really experienced the big Democratic victory in 1964, but I did see the waste of the Congressional mandate of 1974. We deserve our own progressive moment. And it is this year.
The election of Senator Obama can give this country a mandate for change to help working families once again realize the economic promise of the American Dream. The idea that hard work, honesty and devotion to family and community will be rewarded with the opportunity to make life better for the next generation. We have lost that over the years. Just as we lost the force of the moral beacon that America was to the world once upon a time. It is within our grasp to put our country on a path toward greater prosperity and a more peaceful world.
So once again we will knock on some doors and give our pitch. We believe Senator Obama is the candidate that will bring about the necessary change to make our nation's working families prosperous again. He has the talent and commitment to make our world a more peaceful place, safe for our children and grandchildren. We hope you will join us in voting for Senators Obama and Biden on November 4th.
I hope whoever has taken the time to read this will do their best to help as well. At least wish us luck in trying to build the wave of change that will give us the progressive moment we deserve in this generation.
PS...if we get a chance this weekend we will give some updates from the road.
