Today I have been reading the "incitement to violence" speech by Palin and McCain. Before someone is hurt, before we have violence that could spiral out of control, what can be done?
It strikes me that no one will do anything until the tragedy Palin and McCain seem to be stirring up occurs. This reminds me of the Brown shirts.
The reason I ask is that I know there are many lawyers and others with specific knowledge of the law who write comments on this blog, and I am hoping someone has an answer before the whole thing gets out of control. It seems to be doing no good for the press to comment on this. The traditional media is too tepid. But they should do more if, as was reported, a black reporter was insulted and the media covering the event were treated scornfully.
What can stop incitement to violence? As another diarist pointed out, We have no more Robert Welchs to make the candidates inciting violence feel any shame for what they are doing to a country whose citizens will need to work together in extremely perilous times once this election is over.
