First and foremost Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Americans celebrating throughout the US and all points in the world! I spent my best Thanksgiving Day in Germany years ago when we were with three other couples and a German student. Today, I shared the time honor tradition of getting up to see the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. My mom passed it down to me and I pass it down to my daughter. (Note: It also helps to have a connection to the city I was born in and where my dad's family lives in)
I was ready to have a political free day of celebration, tradition, and enjoyment. But as my daughter was watching the parade and I was fixing breakfast I heard a very familiar refrain come over the television.
"Oh God, we've been Rick Rolled for Real!" I said from a distance.
My two girls--7 and 13--don't know Rick Astley from Rick whatshisname from the Cars, but hearing him sing on Macy's parade was truly a surprise to me and many others from a long election season.
I always liked Rick and was glad to see that the Internets help to revive his career (sort of) in some fashion or another. But I have to admit I thought I got knocked over the head and woke up watching the Macy's parade in the 1980s. (Oh wait, they already made a series about something like that didn't they?)
Anyway, it was nice to see some old favorite (did anyone catch Andy Williams near the end) to some really cool highlights from this years parade (the band from Sarasota, Florida made up of musicians ages 18-86).
From our family to yours, may this American of holidays be a blessing in such troubled times like today. Bless those who have least; make time for those you love; do good to those strangers and love ones.
UPDATE: Talk about irony! I was flipping the channels after the blowout games by Tennessee and Dallas to find a TV offer for a new Barry Manilow album featuring covers of the 1980s. So hearing versions of Journey's "Open Arms" and others what song is in the mix on this album? Rick Astley' Never Going to Give You Up!
Folks, I never thought the man who "write the songs" would Rick Roll us! Man, twice in one day...scarry!
