An ode to all those who marched and cried and mourned and taught.
You would be so proud today
To see the young family
Astride the world
Walking arm in arm
Down the runway
Ascending the stage of history.
Knowing that the work of
So many
The sacrifices
Of so many
The deaths
Of so many
Have brought us to this day
A day of joy
A day of hope
A day of atonement
For all that you both
And so many others struggled
You would be so proud today
To know that
The country you loved
The nation you cherished
The people you believed in
Had embraced a man
And his ideals
For a more perfect Union
For a better world
Where the character of one’s soul
Not the sound of one’s name
Nor the color of one’s skin
Is the true mark of grace.
