WARNING: This is a shorter diary than the Diary Police might like & is combined with a mini-rant on my part...
According to the AP here, the family of the California teen who was initially denied a liver transplant by CIGNA is suing them for an unspecified amount. Good for them!
Excerpt:
The lawsuit filed last week in Los Angeles County Superior Court by the family's attorney, Mark Geragos, alleges breach of contract, unfair business practices and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The suit accuses Cigna of delaying and rejecting valid claims, which resulted in the wrongful death of Nataline Sarkisyan.
The Philadelphia-based insurer eventually approved the transplant after Sarkisyan's family held a rally outside Cigna's suburban Los Angeles office. Nataline, however, died hours after the approval was secured.
It's pretty obvious to me that the only reason CIGNA relented to approving the procedure was that they knew Nataline would die before the procedure could even be performed. These bastards should be sued into oblivion and the individuals who made the initial denial tried for manslaughter at the very least...
THIS is why we need universal health CARE, not universal health coverage...
