Last week, George Bush said that this election was about “Peace and Prosperity”. I tried to disagree with him but found my self agreeing that in fact, this election is about peace and prosperity.
What I disagree with is the idea that the Republican party nominee will deliver that to America.
I am not sure what gw means when he says peace and prosperity, but given the events since his election, including, but not limited to the attacks on the world trade buildings, the subsequent market crashes, continued slow economic growth, wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, war mongering with Iran, continued belligerence with Venezuela, North Korea. That list of lack of peace and prosperity can go on and on.
I know there is ample evidence of more economic growth during the years of a democratic president, and certainly the past 7 years of international nightmare have shown a world at peace.
This election is about peace. It is about ending the war in Iraq, reducing the belligerence between the US and the rest of the world. It is about rebuilding the trust between the US and the rest of the world. It is about building a lasting peace throughout the world.
This election is about prosperity. We have gone so far in debt as a country, that it will take centuries to pay it off, if we decide that paying it off is even worth it. Each budget over the past few years has pulled us further and further in debt. Not only that but allowable practices around finance and banking have dragged this economy down pretty drastically. As more people lost their homes, more people lose a good portion of the value of the biggest asset they have. This will become a circle of dome for many people. Economic growth is essentially dead. Tax cuts for the wealthy won't lead to prosperity.
This election is about how to change all that. The war alone has cost the US near a trillion of dollars, and that does not account for all the cost of opportunity lost. I believe that people need to realize that the downturn in the economy is tied to the war in Iraq. That cost has and will not be included in the cost of the war.
I want a leader who will challenge the status quo. I want a leader who will openly raise taxes and cut the war. I want a leader who will stand up and tell it like it is. I want an honest and open leader.
I want an end to lies and secrecy. I think it is bad for the country, and bad for the government. I want an end deceptive labeling of bills in congress. I want an end to an executive branch ignoring the legislative branch, and a judicial branch ignoring the constitution, and a government ignoring the will of the people.
I want to be able to hold my head up high when I go across seas, and be a proud American again.
I don’t know if the democratic party will be able to do this, or even if they want to. But I hope they do, and I am sure that the republican party certainly won’t.
I have already voted for my candidate, but I will gladly vote for which ever democratic candidate is nominated.
