I did it! I got on the national airways twice! I took the plunge. And you can too.
Fun. Fun. Fun. I was so nervous. I called a progressive station and then a conservative station. I first called Stephanie Miller at progressive talk. I was so excited that felt like I was yelling into the phone! She was great. I'm not sure if I made any sense. But the call ran out of time quickly, and she said "Absolutely" to some of my comments. And then late last night, I was listening to John somebody-or-other. You got it right. I don't even remember his last name. I do remember he was talking to a "Dave in Denver" who sounded pro-Obama and this talk show host, John, was giving Dave a hard time. So, I made the call and resolved to sound as friendly as possible.
I wrote down some talking points ahead of time. I tried to remain calm. Of course, the talk show host's job day-in and day-out is too rattle and incite people. They are very good at this. And they know exactly how to trip you up. But I think I held my own with the "Wright" stuff. And I kept in mind, there may be a handful of people that actually did listen to what I had to say.
Anyway, I highly recommend it. The talk shows across the country today are on fire. You would be doing a real service to the campaign and progressive agenda in general if today, or some time in the next few days you got your point of view across.
Are you ranting and raving with the spouse or the friend? Are you driving them crazy with all your politics? Well, put that talk to good use. Progressive talk needs listeners and callers. And you get to vent not only to a friendly ear, but to an entire audience. But keep it civil! Just think, you would be talking to thousands of people!
And then there are the conservative talk shows. It may be hard to get on because they screen you. But try to keep it innocuous enough to get past the screener -- you'll think of something.
Once you are on, remain calm. Have your few talking points ready. Be as honest and forthright as possible. Remember, a lot of the listeners are just regular folks. Be a dignified representative. You may get tripped up, but it's okay. Have fun!
This is a great time for the push back. I've got a good feeling about this. Lots of sympathetic listeners are not only ready for the message of change, but with economic headlines and all we've been through in the past seven years, they need the message of change.
Yes We Can.
