My local paper, the Minneapolis Star Tribune has finally had an article (on the front page no less!) about the "other" candidate for Norm Coleman's US Senate seat, Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer. Most people here at DailyKos are probably not even aware that Al Franken even had other opponents for the DFL nomination for the late, great Paul Wellstone's old seat.
For many people here in Minnesota, the dearth of coverage of this senate race by the largest newspaper in the state has been a source of annoyance, if not outright frustration. The impression has been made that Franken was pretty much all alone, especially in light of the fact that prominent attorney and DFL insider Mike Ciresi dropped out last week. As the StarTribune's headline (surprisingly!) admits: "Prof who ousted Ciresi eyes Franken". My first reaction was "NO SH#T, Sherlock!", Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer was ALWAYS there and had "eyed" Franken from day one of his campaign.
As has been written before, Franken has been doing pretty well and has run a good grassroots campaign (at least the best grassroots effort money can buy), while JNP has been running his total volunteer/grassroots effort on a shoestring budget. The "dollar to delegate" ratio certainly favors Pallmeyer.
The Minnesota senate race is not over by any stretch of the imagination. There is a true blue progressive in the race who is mounting a grassroots effort against a better known and better financed foe. It's nice that the Strib, in it's infinite wisdom, has finally noticed, even if it's six months too late.
