If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear. – George Orwell
In a time of universal deceit - telling the truth is a revolutionary act. – George Orwell
These two quotes are so relevant in today’s political discourse because of a strange phenomenon I have noticed lately. We have been conditioned over the last few years by the corporate owned media into believing things that are unbelievable. We have been conditioned into accepting what is on the TV and on the radio as the truth. We have been conditioned into this world of false statements and "misspeaking" for so long that when someone tells the truth, they seem to be crazy.
We were led to believe that Saddam Hussein had operational WMD and a nuclear program when he didn’t. Anyone who said that it wasn’t true was called a traitor, and a terrorist, so truth was suppressed. We have been told that the economy is great, just look at the Dow Jones Average, which means nothing to middle class America. We have been told that Al-Qaida in Iraq is the same as the Al-Qaida led by Osama Bin Laden. And that this small band of Sunni Arabs in a Shiite country are going to take over the entire country, produce the oil in Iraq and sell it on the open market, and use that money to build nuclear weapons to kill us. We have been told that Baghdad is safer than Washington D.C.
These things are so preposterous that if you just step back and look at them, you have to wonder, what the hell have we been thinking? We have been bombarded with BS for so long that it looks normal, and when someone tells the truth, it seems odd and out of place.
Barack Obama says that people are bitter because of their economic situation. It is true, but he is labeled as elitist for saying it. He says that they have been duped into voting on issues concerning guns, God, and gays, instead of voting for things that actually affect their livelihood. But he is "out of touch".
The truth is what will bring America back to what our founders intended. We must separate ourselves from those who try to make their own truth, and revert back to a "reality-based" community. People are starving in our country, losing their homes, and living in the streets. Meanwhile, we are spending $12 billion a month on a war we don’t want, but can’t seem to end.
The truth is, we are in a crisis. These are not good times. People are suffering. It is not what people want to hear, but it is the truth. Barack Obama says that the change has to start from the bottom and work its way up. What are you doing to restore America? What are you doing to improve your community and bring back our prosperity? It all starts with us. Now. Today. Yes, we can.
