For over 30 days now, we - Obama supporters - have been wondering nervously how the latest barrel of negative (and disgusting) attacks from the Right Wing machine and Clinton will affect Obama's candidacy. We look eagerly at the daily polls to see some hope, sometimes confused at the apparent contradiction between different results.
Here is what we keep forgetting: that Obama has beaten all the odds to reach where he is, beating the conventional wisdom that says his candidacy is just a fairy tale.
A fairy tale that says that a black man, with a funny (and unpatriotic middle-) name with a pastor that shouts "damn" an America which does not follow the promise of its constitution, who has condemn false patriotism that equates flag pins with loyalty and love to your country, who says that poverty and economic frustration makes people more bitter and fundamentalist in relation to guns and religion, issues that are exploited by unscrupulous politicians... can be President - but that's all there is: a fairy tale that can have no place in reality.
Not only Obama has shown he has beaten inevitable Clinton to a stage where he can now lose the remaining races by landslides and still win by a few delegates (but he won't!) - but by all measures, McCain will be a far more easier candidate to tackle than Clinton. McCain can be equated to Bush's 3rd term and everything that is wrong with Iraq. McCain is not charismatic and know very little about either the economy or foreign policy. He has made too many blunders and gaffes, which will be difficult to ignore (even by the media) once Obama starts focusing on him. Tackling Clinton, on the other, proves far more complicated considering that Obama cannot risk alienating Clinton's base, which we hope will be his base in the general election.
I am looking forward to the general election, and to see Republicans in action against Obama, and so should you. We will cover his back whenever we see dishonest and tabloid attacks against Obama, but we can be assured that our candidate is made of teflon and will fight against McCain and his minions. He knows their kind very well.
I am also looking forward to his first debate against McCain - it will be very sweet to see Obama's expertise against McCain's utter ignorance.
